A Gift to Ourselves—Wrapping Up Work on Our New Look




Over the past several months, the Madplum Creative team has learned a thing or two about discovery. Specifically, that you need to make time for the inspired, the wild, and the wonderful. It’s not magic, and it doesn’t happen by accident.

The result has been a shift in the way we see our company as a whole. We’ve always been dedicated to helping our clients define their place in the world and achieve new heights with their brands, and we decided it was time for us to turn this lens inwards to develop a fresh take on the Madplum brand.

To find inspiration, we’ve caught ourselves chasing down more sunsets, engaging in more spur-of-the-moment conversations with each other, diving into more books, and taking time away from the office—instead of letting the office take time away from us.

We’ve found new inspiration in a Proust quote that has been a cornerstone since we first opened our doors in 2004:

“The voyage of discovery is not in seeking new landscapes, but in having new eyes.”

It’s been an educational process to say the least. And we wanted to share a few things we’ve learned about ourselves along the way:

Inspiring experiences inspire us: We’re a brand shop that’s doggedly committed to staying fresh, and we believe we accomplish that by coming together to share collective inspiration. A recent “off campus” breakfast at Boot and Shoe in Oakland was the perfect backdrop to fuel an exchange of ideas (and the heavy dose of caffeine didn’t hurt, either).

The gift is in the process: At Madplum, we talk a lot about gifting. It’s a founding principle of our brand. And while it’s easy to start thinking about the act of “giving a gift” as just the end result—the recipient or the client we’re presenting to—we’re committed to something much bigger than that. We believe that our collaborative creative process is an opportunity to inspire one another and ourselves, allowing us to gift the very best work to our clients.

To think outside the box, you have to go outside the box: We’ve discovered that getting outside the physical walls of the office— whether its taking an afternoon to visit Oakland’s vibrantly artistic Temescal Alley or taking a run through the Mission—helps get our creative juices flowing and get more out of our work. After all, you never know where the next inspiration will be found.

We’re a little nutty… in a good way: We’re self-proclaimed food nuts. That’s why we’re addicted to the natural foods space. And why each year we begin salivating in February for the Expo West conference—the largest national products expo in the U.S.—to find out what’s new, surprising, and delicious. As we continue to grow our brand footprint, we’re noticing some natural laws of attraction at work. Through some serendipitous meetings, we’ve launched new projects with brands like Nourish Organic and Laughing Giraffe—companies committed to making a deliciously healthy difference in the world.
