Thanks for your comment Jan. Excellent insights! I'm inclined to agree with you. If Virgin can effectively integrate their lifestyle expertise into operating hotels, the result could be one of great success.

I believe this is a very viable concept of Virgin and am positive we will see more boutique hotels sharing certain disciplines and thus benefiting from economies of scale and being in a better position to compete with large chains whilst maintaining their style and individuality.

The approach of consolidation is appropriate for a number of non-core business functions. As far as the hotel Information Technology is concerned, for example, My Hotel IT can act as a shared service provider delivering "virtual IT department" services to a collection of boutique hotels and thus helping them reduce their local technology footprint. That results in simplified management, improved compliance, cost predictability and often an improved quality and warranty of service.

If Virgin can leverage their existing lifestyle market presence, customer relationships and central resources to build and operate hotels (surely with the help of subject matter experts from hospitality) they can be highly competitive and successful.

Thanks for your response Olga! It's an interesting movement right? On one end, we have the individualistic boutique hotels who have really found their niche in the market and through their longevity have created a competitive advantage. And on the other end, we have these mega brands who dominate the brand awareness surrounding luxury in their respected industries, yet don't have the track record in the hospitality sector. What are your thoughts? Who do you give the edge to in this battle?

I think it's an interesting idea. It's certainly a clever way to encourage repeat business. Gusts can stay at the same hotel, each time getting a completely new and different experience. But some of these rooms are too extreme for my taste. Am I the only one who think this? For me, I'd prefer different designed rooms, yet all of them classy and luxurious. Anyone agree?
